Hey reefers, cycled a new 29 gallon aquarium for my son but made a rookie mistake of not doing a large enough water change to lower nitrates. They are in the 20-40ppm ATI test. I have mixed up some new salt water, matched the temps and ph levels. Do you think it would ok to change say 50 percent of the tanks water volume? I have 2 black storms, green chromis, 4 hermits, 2 Mexican Turbos. Look like to get nitrates under 10ppm to discourage nusciance algae from forming.

As long as you match salinity and temperature with the new water it shouldn't be a problem.

I would also check with another test kit. API a little tricky and can be done wrong by hobbyist plus can be off especially if expired. Get a Salifert test kit for this as way more accurate and easier to use

You can even do a 100% change out if the parameters are the same in the mix and tank.

Happy reefing!
