I believe it has high metal content which isn't a good thing necessarily. Might be wrong on the reason but know it isn't recommended

Location wouldn't matter. Regular dry rock would be a better route

I have maintained a coldwater marine tank with some lava rock in the past, though leaching from the rocks (and other freshwater substrate) likely caused the never ending diatom bloom in said system . Plus, the surface area of lava rock (and thus its biological filtration capabilities) is inferior to that of ceramic bio-media in the hobby.
