what's wrong with my chalices?

Your chalices are great. I wasn't referring to you I meant in general for people who have been having troubles :)

Haven't seen an issue with my chalices after a year and a half with LEDs. However, I don't have near the collection as m and m.

Its weird that there are varying results for people. How many of you use dimmers for s strictly LPS/chalice tank? I think some people have said that the chalices get burned, but are you turning the LEDs up for SPS?

Is anyone keeping chalices under a DIY fixture that incorporates some True Violet 420nm LED's? I wonder if that would help.

Not quite done with the build yet, but will be running some 420 on their own dimmable channel. It adds alot more pop to the array than just RB/CW. I have some chalices so well see what happens. Having personally seen a strictly LPS/Z&P tank under LED with rich coloring, i think most people are running their LEDs too high,wrong color combo, water quality issues or a combo of the three.

My tank is a mixed reef. Most of my chalices receive low or indirect light. However, my Tyree Red Watermelon seems to like a bit more and is under medium LED lighting.

I thought white LEDs incorperated the full spectrum of light, and the blue color made them pop. Whats the science behind wanting different colors other than for asthetics. I am going to get a dimmer for the LEDs, and probably go 50/50, cree blue and whites. IS that bad? Remember its only for LPS, mainly chalices.

I think Reefledlights' chalice photos speak for themselves in this thread.They run strictly RB/ CW i believe.The coloring on those chalices is super rich which just further illustrates that anyone having issues with fading is due to other factors than LEDs themselves.Mixing in others such as red, true violet etc is mainly for aesthetics.Now that I've seen the true violets combined with the daylights, RB's etc I can't imagine not running TV in any future builds. But they aren't there for growth

He still didnt say what LEDs he uses (brand), or how long they have been under there, or what intensity he is using. There has to be some correlation to the poor results of so many other than bad water parameters. I am trying to figure out if its intesity, or time or brand or color diversity or what, so I dont spend the $$ and hurt my corals, and I do it right the first time.

My experience in a 18 inch tank, i have my cree cw/rb from reefledlights premium bin, drivers set at 950mah then tuned down with my apex, 55 percent intensity on white and 80 percent on blue. I fried a bunch of lps before finding that spot..... and still adjusting intensity since September. I removed the optics and it hangs 4-5 inches over the tank.

Yup,

Lots of factors and that's why we had to work so hard to get to where we are. Intensity is a big factor with rapid acclimation. If you rush it, you will get detrimental results just like any other lighting. On that tank the Chalices are dead center in the tank on the bottom so taking full blast from 120 Premium bin LEDs. I have 12 XPG high noons in there.

Great stuff guys, thanks for the info. I am unsure what the premium bin LEDs are though. I am looking at Cree LEDs, are those premium bins? Also, what intensity do you start at with chalices at 20" depth? And how slowly do you increase the intensity. I am glad there are successfu people out there, as I really want to go to LEDs.

Let's say you go to a burger place for lunch, you have a fantastic burger. The ingredients are fresh and the burger is cooked just right.
you go back the next day, ingredients change up and the quality of the burger changes up.

Each type of LED gets "BIN"d to the manufacturers system that defines their colour and brightness. Just for clarification "premium" is just a term we coined when it comes to bins. Its the brightest bins with the most accuracy to the spectrums they were created to meet. "regulars" to us is just what our competition carries that is whatever you can get yours hands on cheapest without any regard to quality. Royal blues for example have "8" different BINs that affects their brightness and colour.
I would start the lights at 30% and then increase them each week. brightness is controlled by the driver. Go thru all the DIY pages on our site to learn a ton about LEDs in general.

Right on, if you can't dim remove the optics from the whites and that will reduce the "white" spectrum quite a bit and add a more "20k" look. I had my chalices under a 250W Radium running an HQI ballast before converting so I didn't see any fading except a bit on my Tyree pink WM but the rest look better IMO. Anxious to try out my UV LEDs this weekend as well to push into the 400-420 nm spectrum.

Aren't true " UV" LEDs super expensive, like 50 bucks per diode, and more along 375nm? From what I remember LED Engin has them
