Out of curiosity, do you guys just find your leathers from walking into an LFS one day and finding it? Or do you plan it out a bit better?
Yes, that is how I got mine. We have a very nice lfs in our local area.

Zero planning. I saw it in my LFS the day before I was going out of town, figured I wanted one so why not get this one. Zero planning but now it's too big for my tank. Its probably my favorite coral to take a pic of though, my fish like swimming around it and my inverts love hanging from it lol

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who walks into an LFS and not really have any plan of coral I’ll throw into my mixed reef :)
So far I’m at 6 leathers, two are green Kenya’s but I definitely agree, if I could get my hands on a blue kenya it would be amazing.

I need a new camera but I just picked up a handful of leathers and feel inspired. They’re in Qt and/or being delivered next week but a few I’ve had in the display awhile.

A purple green polyp dura leather from Marine farmers. Live aquaria has had nice versions of a similar coral this week and I picked up two purple/green polyp leathers that are being shipped next week. Can’t wait to compare

This one is really cool. Green/ghost sinularia from pacific east. Also a couple Japanese dwarf toadstool leathers.

I have not been on here in a LOOONNGGG time but here are my leathers...the toadstool on the left has been in my tank since the beginning in 2015. When fully open it fills most of that end of the tank. The others, I have picked up here and there over the years.

Yep, long tenacled neon green. They fetch a pretty good price around here!

Thanks! Um, should I mention or not that it came from a LFS 'cheap miscellaneous frag tank'....

That one gets attention and comments from (non reefing)visitors, despite a bunch of what I thought to be eye catching LPS- not exactly off the cheap frag tank stuff either, ha. They love the color, overall appearance and how the polyps swirl and flutter around. In that picture the polyps aren't at their longest either. Also the light was mostly whites at the time of picture. Holds the color/brightness pretty well.

Guess I'm trying to say it kind of sometimes feels like softies as a category are looked down at a little bit in the hobby. As evidenced by the visitor comments, softies really should be regarded on the same level as any other corals.

I think there are a few things at play here - softies don't have quite the colour potential, and they are generally much easier to keep. For hobbyists, that makes them less collectible, and less "exciting" to frag and trade.

However, for non-hobbyists, sticks and brains usually are much less interesting because they are smaller, and they don't move and sway. There is something very calming about softies/euphyllia/anemones. It really looks "alive" compared to the rock like nature of sticks or many encrusters.

I have all 3 and love them all, but no question, movement is what draws people in.
