Makes sense that the lfs would know a Montipora from a Turbinaria. In my opinion, you can't confuse the two in person. Now whether its a cap or not is a whole other ball of wax. That's a lot more difficult to determine.

Lol not to be cynical BUT half the Lfs have NO clue and mislabel stuff all the time. I've had numerous ask me what stuff is....my response is "I'm just a hobbiest why u asking me? U r the "professional"". Lol. Now back to seeing some caps!

It happens, I have a chalice that was labeled as a Green Montipora. If the store only thinks that all plating corals are Montipora capricornis then it is easy enough for them to label all plating coral as such.

I think the only way to settle it is if marvelousone can get a close up picture of the polyps and the corallites. Maybe something in the pic for a size reference. But that's is up to marvelousone.

Man, what kind of places do you guys shop for corals? I have rarely seen blatant misidentifications of genus' at any reputable fish store. Now I see species misidentifications all the time, but those IDs are difficult.

Sorry to be clear it's not the genus Mis id it generally is naming a zoa, chalice, etc....completely wrong. It happens all the time everywhere. I've seen sponsors selling zoas with a name completely different to coralpedia. In Florida there are fish stores everywhere and are but a few that really know there stuff.

Names are just that, names. Nobody has to abide by a common name. You can call something whatever you feel like, and you are not necessarily wrong. Not to mention, naming color varieties is still relatively new to the hobby. That is why we have taxonomy. What is being discussed here is that Flick is challenging a genus ID with just the reference of a poor picture. Saying the fish store is more likely to be wrong then himself.

I was the fishroom manager for 10 years in various LFS. Now for the past four years now i sell to these stores and others all over the world. I have been to many wholesalers and have a book shelf that is about to collapse (not joking, it's going to tip) with coral and fish identification books. I troll the interwebs almost everyday for misidentified corals, specifically SPS. I don't claim to be an expert by any means, nor have i said i have been 100% certain about this coral in question.

I only ask if marvelousone could entertain the idea that his/her coral could be a Turbinaria species by checking out the reference link and pictures i provided. But that is up to marvelousone.

Sorry Frick, didn't intend to mess up your user name. I'm sure nobody appreciates us going back and forth about this, so I think it should die. This statement was the only reason I even said anything in the first place.

^^^That's Turbinaria reniformis. Not a Montipora. It's nice looking tho.

The way it is written, you are informing someone of a mistake, with no disclaimer that you may be wrong. I'm sure you are very knowledgeable with identifications and I'm sure you have helped people on here figure out what corals they have, but to make a statement of certainty like the one above is the only reason I had a problem with it. It is very easy to steer people wrong in this hobby, and a guess disguised as fact always gets me a little miffed. I know you stated later that you weren't 100% sure, but that was after I called you on it. I can write a whole page on why I believe your ID is wrong, but it is mostly from 18 years of experience, not just a book. If you would like, I will PM you with my thoughts on the subject and we can have a conversation without hijacking a post. Let me know.

this was bleached and half dead when i got it....was told to be a green purple rim cap...i was gonna use to house a clam but after being in my tank,colored up like this...

I had the same thing happen to the same coral thats awesome! Yours is much more pronounced than mine was though. It went away after it got stressed out, still have frags with small spots in them. Here is a bad picture, the part where the polyps aren't white is the pink area. Note that when the leds were on (they were not in the picture) the pink color was VERY distinct.
The second pic is the same piece before it changed color.

Hey what exactly is this? I got a coral very similar and was told it was Montastraea Faveolata which I really don't believe it to be. They said it was a "PearlBerry"
