I currently have a Red Sea Reefer tank lid on my aquarium, mainly because of a diamond watchman goby. Unfortunately, it passed away, and I’m now wondering if I should avoid replacing it and remove the lid. The main reason for removing the lid is that the aquarium looks much cleaner and sleeker without it. The great thing about a goby is that it keeps the sand nice and clean, and it’s also a very entertaining fish to watch in action.

All my tanks have been lidless since I started keeping aquariums almost 20 years ago. I currently have 3 salt tanks, no lid, no jumpers. My last jumper was 2 years ago, and it was a new fish, less than 2 weeks. I proudly boast that I had probably less than a dozen jumpers in my 20 years.

I had a recent round of jumpers, not sure why but I had a mini panic attack when I found my sailfin tang on the ground after we had company over and I was checking on the tank after the lights went off. I put her back in and thankfully she has made a full recovery, but I now not only have the lid on but also a few rocks on as the lid was on when she jumped out. So I naturally don’t like the look, but the id rather not repeat that experience.
