I've always wanted to try a life reef 24" skimmer. My only concern is with your sound. I've heard venturi skimmers can be very loud. My new tank will be in the living room and honestly I would rather it be quiet and less efficient then the other way around. If I go lifereef I will be using a dc pump to reduce noise and increase adjustability.

It will depend on how it is installed in my experience. If the sump area is closed then it will not be that bad. You will hear it when you take off the collection cup or the lid. If it is plumbed correctly with a properly sized pump you will not hear any humming.

If anyone has exceptional hearing they may pick it up. If the sump area is open, they more than likely will. No one mentioned it over the years and I have had it in the cabinet closed and more recently open.

But as you noted venturi skimmers can be louder than others. Small trade off on performance. I can't help with the "try" part because I'm a bit biased after owning one for so many years. I feel they are the bees knees. But honesty in reefing if one has sensitive ears they may hear it.

I've worked around fighters for so long my $0.02 is sort of useless :D

I'm with you on the ****** hearing unfortunately my wife isn't lol. Cabinet will have the doors shut. I think I'll just try it if not sell it for a needle wheel.

Doors closed will help, honest. I just do not know beyond that. I wish I could help more. Sorry.

If you haven't done so shoot Jeff an email via his portal and ask. He will give his take on it.

Good luck.

I have talked to him, but I wanted to hear more from customers then the owner. I will say this he did spend quite a bit of time with me on the phone explaining everything and answering questions. Not saying he's shady and would lie just would like to hear a customers side.
