Hey all,

In the early stages of planning a 150g FOWLR tank with a volitan lionfish. What other tank mates would you guys recommend from experience? I'm entertaining the idea of a snowflake eel, harlequin tusk, or maybe a purple tang? Getting mixed info on compatibility online. I'd love a Picasso Trigger, but hear they will pick on the Lion.

A Rhinopias and a Brasiliensis scorp :-)

I think all your choices will work, I had a picasso and many other more aggressive triggers with volitans for many years and never had an incident. Like with all they can be unpredictable and I think the trigger nipping lions is way overblown. I've got fiends in the business of lfs and maintenance and they pair triggers with lions all the time. That's actually a cool line up you have there.

Triggers can vary wildly as far as nippiness goes. I've seen lions and triggers kept together often. Sometimes there isn't any nipping toward the lions, other times it has been pretty consistent. It's up to you if you want to risk it, but if it starts to go sideways, be prepared to act.

Other possible tankmates may include, semilarvatus or pyramid butterfly, flagfin angel, a large twin spot or red coris wrasse.
