Hey all. I got this mp60 that's been used for about 4 years. It's a bit loud but that's obviously expected and it was a pretty good deal so I can't complain much.

Can you confirm if the noise is caused by old bearings? Will swapping them out for new ones fix it? I'm okay with a bit of diy but I can still return if it's not salvageable as agreed with the guy I got it from.

Honestly, that's not very loud at all. I've heard worse. You can open it up, clean it out and lube it with moly grease. I would also check the magnet while you are at it to see if that is rusting and/or intact.

I would test it in water since they are not meant to be run out of water. Water helps lube the parts which are most likely ceramic and not bearings.

Sounds like one of my MP40s. Its pretty annoying being next the the dining table. I'm done with vortechs. Too many noisy dry sides and split open wet side magnets for my taste. Its not like they're $100 units. I have 8 total and will be replacing all of them as they fail.

PS. My failing dry sides have not been dropped. That's usually an instant death sentence

On the wet side? Currently soaking in rodi water with some citric acid. Supposedly it's only ever been cleaned like that, never with vinegar. Looked okay to me.

So that level of noise is a standard with vortechs? Or does it get loud over time?

If it's as loud on the tank as it is in the video I don't consider it normal. It may not be unusual but it isn't normal. Its the bearings on the dry side failing. I have one noisy now but my others are still quiet. IME it will just get progress only worse over time. The dry side for an MP60 is $500. Mine are MP40s so the dry side is $300 but I'll replace the entire unit with a different brands before buying a new dry side. My luck I'll buy a new dry side and the magnet will fail on the wet side next so I'll be out $300 and I'll have to spend another $120 for a wet side. No thanks.
This is one of my MP10 wet sides. This shouldn't happen for the price they sell vortechs for IMO

Supposedly, they only rust when cleaned repeatedly in vinegar. Something mild like citric acid or just warm rodi water shouldn't cause that as long as the casing isn't broken. Unless that's something that's easy to do on accident. Still, for that much money, you'd expect the casing to be rock solid.

Mine have only been cleaned in citric acid. Its the second MP10 dry wet side I've had fail. Granted I have 8 vortechs none of them new but none are as old and my tunze which has been going strong for 10+ years.
