Lowering PAR in one spot.

Has anyone tried to put a little square of something on their aquarium top to lower PAR a bit in a certain spot?

I don't know how you could make it look acceptable for long term use, but back in the day we used to put eggcrate on top of our tanks and put layers of window screen to help acclimate the tank when we switched out metal halide bulbs.
