Getting one is better honestly, pairs will just end up with two males in the long run and this is a large flasher that can be more boisterous to others of its species.

Also I will add they get big full grown and will not do good in smaller aquariums. My tank is 6’ long and 30” tall and he was cramped in the tank. The height of tank matters as they like to dive up and then down.
