Wouldn’t the base be hard like a skeleton? OP said it was soft and reacted to touch.
Not if that “rock” is an old Skelton. There is branching alveopora that creates a skeleton similar to the rock in the pic.

Not saying it is, just stating it is possible.

Not saying it is, just stating it is possible.
it is a coral skeleton and the tentacles do resemble alveopora! better yet after picking at it with some forceps the base seems to be skeletal

yea just keep a close eye on it but it looks really similar to a hammer with the tentacle shape and they have a tendency of making babies like that where the bud flies off and lands somewhere and grows

i think it actually looks like a sympodium coral, not sure but it just looks small colony of them maybe

There is sympodium on the rock. The hitch hiker in question is the green thing in the center. We're guessing a hammer coral bud, but only time will tell

oh i see now, it was so small i didnt realize before. Cool but i would worry the sympodium may choke the small hammer out before it has time to grow
