How fast does a male turn into female when his mate dies?

Situation: my female of my established pair is dying. She is at least 10 years old. The last few spawns she has become very prolapsed. Within the last few days she has become lethargic and stopped eating. Her vent area is bulged and I suspect there is nothing I can do, there must be some internal issue.

The male is still doing great. I have another fish I just sourced that is almost certainly female. She is in quarantine but that will take a couple more weeks minimum. she is slightly larger than my current male.

How should I approach pairing them up? I don’t want to wait too long and let my male start going female.

In my experience you should be just fine introducing it whenever. They will fight it out and assert dominance

There are many variables that go into the transformation, there is not a set time. They speculate 3 to 6 months depending on the variables. I would not introduce another possible female to a tank with an established female.
Consider a breeder box when the time comes.

Sorry about your geriatric female clown's decline. :-(

3-6 months is plenty of time, I was worried he would start turning within a couple weeks of the females death.

Am going through a similar issue (but the female jumped out when the cover was off 😔) and my attempted solution is to send the male through QT with the newly acquired female.

Sorry to hear that! How is the new couple getting along?
