The male Kuteri Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon kuiteri) is a beautiful and active reef-safe wrasse prized for its intricate spotted patterning and vibrant male coloration. This species thrives in mature marine aquariums of at least 75 gallons with abundant rocks, a well-established sand bed, and peaceful tankmates. Fine sand substrate is essential because Leopard Wrasses bury themselves at night and when stressed. Stable water quality with temperatures between 74–80°F, pH 8.1–8.4, and low nitrate levels is important for long-term success. Male Kuteri Leopard Wrasses are constant foragers that benefit from multiple small feedings daily consisting of nutrient-rich Gamma frozen foods, copepods, mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality prepared diets. Mature reef systems with healthy pod populations greatly improve acclimation and feeding success, especially for newly imported specimens. They are generally peaceful but can be timid during acclimation, so aggressive tankmates should be avoided. A secure lid is highly recommended, as Leopard Wrasses are known jumpers. With stable conditions, a varied diet, and a mature reef environment, male Kuteri Leopard Wrasses can become hardy, active, and stunning additions to reef aquariums.
