Grow the pods in a 2.5 gallon with live rock and a airstream, grow the phyto in a 2 liter bottle, both are in the sun.

Okay. My suggestion is to move them to a 5 gal bucket with some chaeto. Keep rigid airline with light flow. You will need phyto. Keep water tinted green.
For phyto try culturing your own as it gets expensive. Very easy to do.

Last comment. Make sure if he is eating frozen prepared foods- keep target feeding him and don't let him get to the point where he is only eating pods.
