Manganese supplement for Goniopora?

That said, I'm curious what @Hans-Werner says about goniopora. :)
We have three species of Goniopora, let's call them Red, Pink and brown with Fluorescent Tentacles. The Red has short polyps, Pink has intermediate polyps and Fluorescent Tentacles has long polyps. We have Red and Fluorescent Tentacles for quite some years and Pink maybe for three years. They pose no challenge, like "normal" LPS, not much different from "brain corals" (former Faviidae), so quite hardy and adaptive. We had Red and Fluorescent Tentacles in our "Living Lab" (small tanks in a partition wall with graphics of a chem lab) at the 2022 and 2024 Interzoo because they are hardy, adaptive and open well soon after transport.

They get no special treatment and I don't feed them extra in our systems. I heard a talk of Justin Credible about keeping Goniopora quite a long time ago in Sindelfingen in Germany. He said if you feed them most Goniopoa are easy except the free living Goniopora stokesii. This is also my experience, but I don't feed except for special projects/trials.

I think it was Julian Sprung, but am not sure, who reported that at the Waikiki Aquarium at Hawaii they keep Goniopora and they use water from a well that is rich in manganese. I guess this is the origin of "Goniopora need manganese". In never really tested it but maybe the Gonioporas just benefit from our "manganese twice the iron concentration" approach in our trace elements supply.

I’m wondering the following: Let’s assume that the natural value in the ocean is 0.17 micrograms/l. In my case, I dose 0.139 micrograms/l of manganese daily with AFR. Should the goal be for manganese to be detectable in the ICP (it never is for me), or can I assume that the daily dosing provides enough manganese for the corals? I split the amount into 10 portions per day. I’ve read that for trace elements, a bolus dose is better than splitting it into smaller amounts. But as I’m writing the question, I realize that this might be one of those questions that can’t really be answered. :(

Probably right there's no perfect answer available.

On a related note, how fast manganese depletes by precipitation and perhaps other means may depend on what form you dose. Since food grade manganese gluconate is now cheap and readily available, I wonder if folks may get different results dosing a gluconate than a simple inorganic form. :)

The answer is (not so ) complex. The manganese doesn't evaporate into the air. It is still there, just not dissolved in the water. Bakteria are the most likely major sink for the manganese. Corals can feed on bacteria or can feed on other organisms that feed on the bacteria or they can harbor some of the bacteria themselves and feed on a good proportion of them.

This could be the explantion why it is not so important to measure and find dissolved manganese, it is just important to dose it. This is where the ICP labs fail. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Good idea and good "test".

If it is a problem of solubility, it may work, if manganese concentration is controlled by bacteria, it will not.

If I remember it right, manganese would be more stable in seawater/saltwater, if not bacteria would oxidize and precipitate it.

I ordered the first link to the bulk supplements, Manganese Gluconate. is it possible to add some of this Manganese to my Acro Power which is on an autodoser?
