Manhattan area saltwater fish stores

I am going to New York and I will be in the Chelsea area an I can’t find any stores that sell cool corals and saltwater fish. Has anyone found any saltwater stores around that area that can help me out?

Head out to Long Island if you can.

Years ago Manhattan Reef used to be a big deal in the city area.

You don't mention when you'll be in NYC, but if it's June 6th or 7th, pop across the river into New Jersey for Reef-A-Palooza.

Is Manhattan Reefs still in business?

No, they shut down about a year and a half ago, they have a sister shop out in California and they kept the website open so they still sell out of there.

Stay away from total aquariums in downtown Manhattan unless you wanna buy a $200 gsp frag from freshwater people trying to keep coral.

There's a few good ones in queens.
New york reef aquatics is one of my favorites, I'm drawing a blank on the other but they're my goto for acans or pipe organ.

I agree to go to long island if you can. Coutry critters is great. TIA collection corals is phenomenal for acros if you can get out there. I also highly recommend reef shark if you want some oddballs. The aquarium shop in Westbury is solid for coral, nothing too crazy but pretty average with good stock, but they keep their fish at 1.015 so keep that in mind if you're getting fish there. but honestly long island is the way too go. Also not for coral but you can call brians tropical aquarium and pets and they're surpringly good for fish and are really good to order things in if you want.

My last rec is aqua hut if you have a good qt setup, they don't do coral but they have no idea what they're doing over there from a business standpoint and they're highly negotiable. I bought a huge batch of pom pom crabs for 2 bucks a piece recently and a blood orange clown for 10. I've never had disease problems but they're sketchy enough that I don't trust it to go directly into the tank. Either way they went from qt to the dt with 0 problems.

I bought a huge batch of pom pom crabs for 2 bucks a piece recently and a blood orange clown for 10. My grandpa finds issues with their fish, and he only gets inverts there. So yeah, I agree with your last part.

TIA is super fancy but the employee/owner guy? Was not very friendly when I went there

Aqua hut is weird because the fish never have ich or velvet, they're more like missing fins or have really obvious diseases that are so far gone. Like, last time I went I saw a group of 4 firefish in a tank with a moray and a lionfish. But I bought my clown there happy and healthy. I wanted a pair but the second one had a chunk missing out of the side of his head and was in a different tank with a trigger and a puffer. Just really bad practices honestly.

The TIA thing is weird because the guys always has been super nice to me when I go there. They aquaculture their own sps and you can see their grow out tanks in the front and know what you can look forward to in a year or two.
But I dunno about him, he gives me discounts for some reason for nothing in particular. Like I'll mentally ring the tab up in my head as I'm picking and then randomly he just goes,"I'll knock 20% off for you" and I'm not like a regular, i go every few months when I'm in the area.

Im pretty sure he was just in the middle of something, when i get my new tank setup i do wanna revisit him
