mantle receded in small area

I picked up a new maxima clam a couple of weeks ago for my sps tank. The last couple of days it has been receded on just one side close to its output spout, maybe only just about 1/2 inch. Not sure if it is anything to be concerned about. I have a lot of flow in my tank and the clam reacts quite a bit as my fish swim over it. I'm wondering if one of fish might have nipped it or too strong of current? Thinking of moving it towards the side of my tank where possibly the current isnt as strong and maybe the fish wont swim around it as much. thanks for any advise

Oh man, when I have this happen, it usually is the beginning of the end for the clam. Since it's an SPS tank, it's got enough lighting, right?

From my experience small retraction in one spot is a indication something has nipped at it in that spot.

Not much change, if any thing it might have been a little more extended in that spot. Is 280 par enough lighting for this guy? I have it center stage in my sand bed

I'm not sure I would make a change unless you have LEDs and can boost output or add an additional light. Start making a ton of adjustments and you will start chasing a problem that runs faster than you.

I could bump up my LEDs but most of my corals are in between 400-700 par and not sure I want to go higher with them.

Ya, I wouldn't touch it honestly. Maybe put a time lapse on the clam if you can to see if you can catch anyone nipping.

I know this is off topic, but 400-700 PAR? What coral are you keeping? Got a build thread? :)

Too much flow can cause the retraction issue. The clam will eventually get used to the fish swimming over it. I wouldn't rule out nipping. If you move the clam to lower flow just make sure it doesn't loose par. How big is the clam?

The clam is about 4-5 in. It seems to be slowly trying to extend its mantle. It is now at least even with the shell and starting to edge over. It might be the flow, I can see the mantle move occasionally with the flow.

I know this is off topic, but 400-700 PAR? What coral are you keeping? Got a build thread? :)

I started one when I up graded to my 210 but didnt seem to get much interest from it so I quit updating it. I believe that I covered my lighting but dont remember.

You'll want to orient it so that the flow moves from one end of the clam to the other, and not across the flaps. That, or find a hole where it will be protected from the current.
