Marine Betta, Reef Safe?

Hey everyone,


I’m considering adding a marine betta (Calloplesiops altivelis) to my reef tank and wanted to get some first-hand feedback. I know they’re gorgeous and have that unique predator look, but I’m a bit unsure about their reef compatibility.
Specifically, I’m curious about:

• How “reef safe” they really are – do they bother corals, shrimp, or other small invertebrates?
• Their behavior around other fish, especially small or timid species.
• Any feeding quirks or challenges in a reef environment.

Has anyone kept one in a fully stocked reef before? Would love to hear your experiences, tips, or things to watch out for!

Had two in different tanks. Will eat small fish according to reports, however mine never did and completely reef safe. Without open rock you will never see. Don’t directly feed and condition to seek food so you will see it more.

I have a relatively small yellow watchman along with a scooter blenny, banggai, and golden angelfish that I'm concerned about. Less concerned about the yellow watchman since he's not really accessible from anywhere. There is also a large fire shrimp and a medium size skunk cleaner shrimp. According to ORA they would "smash" cleaner shrimp since their mouths can open a lot larger than it seems.

I had my previous one for 17 years, and he never touched any tank mates. I kept him with just about everything. I even kept him with nano gobies and he never touched them. I had just about everything kind of shrimp with him, and he never touched them. Ghost shrimp were the only thing that weren’t safe around him. I would start with live ghost shrimp. It took a little while, but he ate everything. Mine would eat flake and pellets, and I even got him to eat nori from my hand.

The risk to your inhabitants is marginal including the shrimp. I currently have one in QT that is already eating frozen mysis.

To add to this. Mine hid quite a bit for the first year or so, but after that, he was front and center at pretty much all times. They are not aggressive, but mine would smack the tangs or any fish with his tail if they ever tried to boss him around. He was king of the tank.
