Introduction
Hi everyone, I’m Mateo. This is my second reef tank. My first was back in 2009 and was a 75 gallon. I now currently have this 50 gallon system along with a 5 gallon pico tank. I’m on YouTube under the name Mateo’s World where I share my interests with anyone and everyone.
Do you have a video of your tank?
My last video update was march 2025 so be on the lookout for a 2026 update soon.

Lighting PAR and Goals
I run a 14 hour light cycle. I start at 1% blues only for 1 hour to simulate dawn. A 3 hour ramp up to 50%. Then a 3 hour ramp up to peak at 60%. A 3 hour ramp down back to 50% then a 3 hour ramp down to 1% blues only for a 1 hour dusk. I also tune the light to gradually increase to a whiter spectrum as the peak approaches. It feels more natural and helps simulate the changing angle of the sun through out the day. The dusk and dawn periods are important as well to help give a circadian rhythm to the system by giving everything time to wake up gently and go to bed peacefully. This is a habit I have kept from my old halide/t5 days. As to actual par readings, I have no clue. The corals seem to like it so that’s what I make my settings based on.

Dosing Equipment Detail
I run three dosing pumps. I have a Ecotech Versa set up to dose all for reef four times through out the day, a Kamoer F1 for Acropower twice weekly and another Ecotech Versa for my top off water, about 700ml a day.

All For Reef handles my trace elements and Acropower for aminos
Water Chemistry Detail
It runs pretty stable with the All For Reef but I do have to periodically dose alkalinity to keep up with calcium. I also dose magnesium to keep it elevated a little bit for euphyllia

Aquarium Natural and Mechanical Filtration

  4. Carbon
Water Changes
YES
Water Change Details
I do a 15 gallon water change every couple months or as needed when nitrates rise
Nutrient Export Details
I rely on my rock, skimmer and Chemipure elite for the majority of my nutrient export. The 200 micron mesh filter socks handles the large detritus.
Additional Maintenance Details
I keep my hands out of my tank as much as possible and let it run on its own most of the time.

After reading one of @Randy Holmes-Farley articles, When Do Calcium and Alkalinity Demand Not Exactly Balance? , I believe I have a better understanding on why my alkalinity has been falling while it appears my calcium is rising. In doing water changes and skimming wet to bring down my nitrates, I have been unknowingly exporting the alkalinity bound up in the nitrogen cycle by exporting nitrates. I had also slightly increased the all for reef dose several months ago to try to keep up with alk consumption. Now I know where the Alk is going and why, over time, my calcium has risen. Since I use all for reef I should be dosing at a constant 2.8dkh/20.1ppm alk/cal ratio. I am going to dose to raise my Alk manually while decreasing my all for reef a touch. This should get it back closer to in balance with my calcium now that I have my nitrates to an acceptable range. I will now keep this in mind going forwards. Thank you for the chemistry lesson Randy!

I finally happened across my holy grail coral at @Queen City Corals . They had it listed as a long tentacle toadstool but it is more weeping willowish than I’ve ever seen in person. Here it was in their store

And here it is in my system finally starting to open up…. it’s been a long time since I’ve been excited about a coral…. 😁
