Hey Reef2Reef community! I’ve been holding off on starting my build thread but here we are!

So, I started out with a plan to find everything used or at a discount because this hobby becomes more rewarding and less stressful when you spend less money. That being said, if you cheap out on your equipment, things can go south very quickly!

Anyway, the tank itself turned out to be in a package deal on Facebook Marketplace. After weeks of looking for the right deal, I settled on this.

As you can see, the tank came with a Kessil A160WE, gooseneck mount, a hydor koralia nano, and the tank was also now rimless. Not pictured is a Kessil A80 Tuna Blue as well. $300 for everything. I would say that’s a good deal!

I bought a couple pounds of wet Carib Sea Life Rock and 20 pounds of Carib Sea Arag Alive from my LFS.

Eventually I found a deal for $60, 20 pounds of dry Carib Life Rock at Petsmart so I hopped right on that.

Planning to keep a Firefish— I knew this rimless tank needed a lid for sure. I decided upon building a mesh lid and cutting an acrylic piece to fit the bowfront.

With a ton of surface area for evaporation to occur, I knew I needed an ATO. I went with the Reef Breeders Prism for simplicity. Under the tank I just have a 5 gallon bucket of RODI water. Seems to do the trick just fine!

I also found a great deal, $50, on a controller for the Kessil. Here’s my settings!

In the back chamber, I have a few upgrades. I went with a MJ-1200 return pump, a JBJ fuge light with a wad of Chaeto, the In Tank media basket, and an Eheim Jager 100w heater plugged into an Inkbird controller. In the media basket I have ceramic beads, Chemi-Pure Blue, and filter floss. I just change out the floss weekly and I don’t really touch the other media. The Chaeto can’t be seen because the fuge light is off but I’m sure you can picture what it looks like. I just scraped off the paint in the back of the tank with a razor blade.

My wiring is a bit of a mess but alas, cable management has never been my strong suit!

To cycle this tank, I chose to do a fishless option. The previous owner gave me a bottle of Algae Barn Nitrocycle which is essentially bottled ammonia. I used this in combination with a couple brands of bacteria— Microbacter7 and StartSmart. The cycle took two weeks and after those two weeks came a pair of clownfish.

Here’s a super poor image of these guys… better to come! Apparently the white one is a rare “Sapphire” snow because it has blue on its tail. Then I got a Gladiator as well. They have grown to love one another!

a couple weeks after that I started adding coral… I know it was early but I couldn’t wait. I started with a $10 frag.

Overtime, I found some nice sellers on the Facebook Marketplace. I got more Zoanthids and an Indo Purple Tip Hammer!

I went through some ugly phases as well. A dinoflagellate outbreak…

I resolved this issue with brushing it off and siphoning it out. I also dose MB7 daily now— 5ml. Perhaps I got very lucky!

Another huge help was Algae Barn reaching out to me and sending me some Ecopods and their Oceanmagik! I daily dose/feed my corals with the Oceanmagik. When I received my pods I could literally see them swimming around!

Here’s where it gets a little crazy and we move to today. I found a nice lady on the Facebook Marketplace who was shutting her tank down. She had many large corals that I received all for $100!

- A massive Octo-Spawn
- nice Ultra Hammer
- big colony of Duncans
- XL Kenya Tree
- half-dead Favia that I am nursing back to life
- rock of GSP

My LFS also has a cool deal— 5 Zoa Frags for $40.. so I stocked up on those while supplies lasted. Also $30 Rock Flower Anemones.

I also have started a GSP wall. My LSF was kind enough to give me a sheet of it! In this photo you can also see my new Firefish we dubbed “Big Spike” because he’s like 3.5” which I learned is very big for a Firefish. Unfortunately the GSP isnt open in this photo! But, it grows every day, it’s actually crazy. I can leave for work and come back 8 hours later to see it has grown a few millimeters. Definitely will be a great live background!

So, here we are today, fully opened up, everyone seems very happy after feeding a cube of PE Mysis shrimp. I do a 5 gallon water change bi-weekly using Red Sea Coral Pro salt and that’s it!

Reefing can be cheap and easy but it’s nothing to hold back the wallet or time on for sure.
