Hi guys, I picked up a Maxi Mini two days ago. Even after turning the flow off for a few hours it wouldn't firmly anchor itself to a rock. The foot looked OK and intact.

Eventually I turned the flow back on which pushed the nem into a cave. It appears to have attached to the rock now but it's in a crevice and hasn't moved much in over a day. All I can see is the foot which seems a healthy red color. It does appear to react to light.

At what point do I try to coax it out and into the light? Are they smart enough to move themselves out of a dark spot or will I have to intervene? Thanks for your advice.

(Sorry for the crappy photo)

Btw, that was as soon as we introduced it to the tank also. Maybe it's a means of survival in different parameters than it was accustomed. Just curious are your nitrates on the high side?

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I've heard nems are prone to splitting when stressed, I've never had one before tho. Nope my nitrates and phosphates have always been trace.

I've been shining a flashlight on it occasionally and it does move its tentacles into the light so that's encouraging. It just hasn't moved into my LED lights yet.

I have owned a few. They always went into "hiding" when introduced and worked their way back out and to a spot they like.

I recommend leaving all lights and flow "normal" and allow it to find that spot.

Also, I have found mini maxi's will move when you change light and flow more often than naught.

no problem...…..just sit back and watch......don't touch anything.
Then, it it happens to stop in a spot you like, feed it a small amount of mysis, or a small piece af uncooked fish......like very small.

then after 4-5 days, feed it again.

Then mabe evry week or two.

I have found if nems have the light, flow, and a food source, thy tend not to move.

Don't over feed! just a little like I said.

Update: the nem repositioned itself a couple days later to receive a small amount of light and food but hasn't moved more than an inch or two.

I've fed it some mysis twice but won't be feeding it again until it moves to a more desirable spot.

Awesome! It will most likely move up as it gets adjusted to your lighting.

I agree don’t feed it. It’s also photosynthetic so if light is its only source of food, it should move again.
