I just wont your opinion on would you swop a vortech mp40 qd pump for a maxspect gyre xf250-280

iv got 2 vortech mp40 qd and must say I like the look of the flow that the gyre produce and how you can place near top of water surface"

Question
Are the maxspect noisy or just when ramped right up or on surge?

where is best place to put your powerheads ?

its my 1st marine tank so sorry for all questions ;Shamefullyembarrased

Gyres to me are louder actually. And they require frequent cleaning. I sold my 250’s and 230’s because I am tired of taking them apart every two months. If you don’t do it the flow rate drops like a rock.

I am also looking at purchasing either the Vortech MP40 s or the Gyre wavemaker. I currently have three MP10s on my 75 gallon reef and I love them . but Have a peninsula 130 gallon tank build coming up and would like any info or experience as well, thanks a bunch

I run two 230's on my present tank and have for a year give or take with no issue. I do put them in a bucket of 50/50 vinegar/RODI fresh maybe every 6 weeks for cleaning and they are not noisy but run a low level in L.T.C. mode ramping from 10 to 40% which I do not hear but can see on the control.

In the past, I've had most of the MP's with no mechanical issues but without the foam cover was always fearful of one of my BTA's doing a walkabout which happened once and it is the only reason I switched as the 230's seem to do to better for me with so many BTA's in my tank.

I like them both.

I recently had 4 MP40s on my 180 gallon that I sold for 2 xf250 gyres. To me, the gyres give me a better flow pattern on a longer tank. I feel like the gyres can give me a broader reach that doesn’t upset the sand bed, and still can give me good surface agitation.

I also got tired of having the dry side look on the outside of the tank...with 2 MP40s on each side it got old. With the gyres I can place them up higher in the tank even though everything is on the wetside, so it’s not as big of a drawback as far as looks.

My MP40s were not QDs but they were louder than the gyres. I agree gyres can make a light whining sound if you listen closely but nothing compared to the sound of the MP40s.

The other thing that irritates me with not just the vortechs but Ecotech in general. The reeflink was horrible for me. Whenever I needed to make a change I always had to reset the reeflink and often times it would freeze up or not save my changes. Once you figure out the gyre controller I think it’s super easy to use, while not as convenient as having on your phone.

I am a big fan of the nutrient transport mode on the MP cuz of the ability to stir up all the crud and clean my tank I like running NTM for 15 minutes after feeding. Do the Gyres have any type of cleaning mode like that??

I don’t think they do but the natural motion of the gyre in either forward or reverse does a good job getting crud in the water column.

I too ran NTM with my MPs and I didn’t notice a drop off with my gyres.

I’ve had a Gyre in my RSR 250 tank for just over a year - Glamorca-GP03 is what is is branded as in Australia. It’s had a basic clean 3 times and I haven’t really noticed any big degradation in flow from new or in between. In the past few months it has got a little noisier, giving a whirr or hum, particularly noticeable when it is in constant flow mode. I expect a good vinegar bath will address that however, just haven’t got around to it yet.

I like the fact I get two flows out of the one device, by changing the angle of attack of each side. I also like the fact I can set a daily profile to imitate a changing environment. So when it comes to bang for buck I think they are great option. I also think they look pretty good.

If I set up another tank I would think long and hard about MP40s however. I would need a minimum of 4, which is quite pricey, possibly 6. I do like the simplicity of cleaning and the individual controllability to get exactly the flow I want.

I have an Ice Cap 3k in my 40gal. I had a mp40qd in there before the gyre. Can't say I could choose one over the other to be honest. They both have pros and cons. I prefer the flow pattern of the gyre. The control and easier cleaning goes to the Vortech, imo.
