So I have a set of xf230, I am currently setting up a 180 gallon. So I am thinking of buying a set of xf250s from a friend. Can you program them all together perhaps through the wifi app if I buy the ivcp6 or whatever it's called?

So would it not work to have 2 sets of 2 running? Or is there a better option for a 180?

Programming on Maxspect gyres is a bit lame I will agree. I run two MP40s and 2 XF230s on a crowded 139G and it does actually work OK. I just run random Reef Crest & gyre equivalent. The gyres are vertical across the back and the MPs are opposed across the middle/front.

While I have to manage sand piles all the time, the acros are good with it. Tinker a little.

Would the 250s be enough by themselves? Or both sets on random, not trying to invest in 2 mp40s.

You can still program them as 2 different sets. Deciding where to put the second set would be my only concern.

Sorry not trying to sell the MP40s. My point was that the ability to synch all four is not critical. Kept clean, I believe what you have is enough flow for SPS.

I would suggest the 250s horizontally opposed left and right walls. High (~3" below water line) and center/front position on side walls.

Then the smaller ones vertically opposed left and right walls near back glass. As low as you can go without sucking up sand. These will clear all the poop from behind rock work. You may have to reduce flow on these.

This was all trial & error for me but it works. The real PITA is keeping the gyres clean enough to move water at their potential. Small motors / large blade surface area. They need to be kept clean. The MPs are more forgiving on cleanliness IMO.
