Maze brain growth pattern

This might sound like a dumb question... Will a maze brain (Platygyra) grow naturally into a globe shape? Or does it need to grow around a rock or a round object to get that shape? I have one small frag now and would like to get another one. It is just attached to a small rock now.

It will grow over the rock then continue to plate over the sandbed. That's a really nice platygyra, makes me miss our old one.

By chance do you still have this guy? If so how much has it grown? I know this is an old post and all.
