Mechanical Filtration

I currently have a 40 gallon turtle tank. I would like to convert a different tank to a reef tank. I know what skimmer, but for mechanical filtration is there a good way to have filter socks in a reef tank without a sump?

One alternative possibility is to use a canister filter filled with poly floss.

I use HOB AquaClear for mechanical removal swapping out sponge every few days.

I don't run any mechanical filtration other than skimmer. Has worked for me for a while
