Hey all! Helping my son set up his first tank and get his feet wet in the hobby. Bought a pair of clowns and flame angel over the weekend and have them in a 10 gal QT tank. Have not started medication regime yet as was observing and getting them to eat first.

Running sponge filter and heater.

All fish eating great! Eating a thawed mix of san fransico bay mysis and LRS reef frenzy. Today I noticed the flame is “flashing” against pvc and one of the clowns has stringy white poop.

My question is, I’m not sure what to treat for first ? Isn’t stringy white poop a sign of internal issues but flashing is ich? Haven’t had to QT in years since I haven’t added livestock to my tanks in forever lol. API general cure for flukes or gestational tract issues or ich because of the flashing. Any advice would be great #fishmedics #fishmedics

If someone could help me tag @Jay Hemdal or any of the fish medics I would appreciate it. Not sure how to do it on mobile and need advice on order of operations for treatment at this point. Used to copper first then praxis/ general cure for remaining issues but not sure which to prioritize first. No visible white ich spots on any fish

Start with PraziPro as it may be flukes ( a video will be helpful with assessment). Dose prazi at 85% of recommended and apply initial dosage known as an interval lasting for 8 days, do a water change and do one more 8 day dose interval
Use airstone with prazi as it does reduce both oxygen and appetite. as for the white feces, likely excess mucus in stomach lining from Mysis shrimp. Cut back on mysis and you should see a change in color and consistency of feces

@vetteguy53081 thanks for the quick response. I don’t have Prazi on hand. Only medication’s currently on hand are copper power and API general cure. Will general cure treat flukes as well since one of the active ingredients is Praziquantel?

Hard to catch a video of the flame flashing since it’s not all the time. Just noticed it every so often when observing the fish today (QT tank is in my office so a lot of observation time). Clown had stringy white poop that stayed attached for about 30 mins after eating.

All fish are eating and otherwise look healthy. Just don’t want to treat for the “wrong thing” first if time is of the essence.

Please post video to see frequency of flashing and General cure has some formalin as well as prazi but at low level. You could try that and see how fish respond to GC with the flashing

@vetteguy53081 Will try to get a video. It will happen a few times in a short period then not happen for over an hour. It isn’t consistent. Again no white spots for ich/ velvet so wasn’t sure if it could be flukes I should treat for first.

Was the 10 gallon cycled properly? that's a pretty small tank to use for three fish. Be sure to monitor the ammonia level and keep it below 0.25 ppm.

Here is our basic quarantine protocol:

@Jay Hemdal seachem ammonia alert badge shows 0 ammonia. Honestly was not properly cycled as this was setup in an emergency situation due to my wife not understanding and making these impulse purchases for my son’s birthday! I did have a bottle of dr Tim’s one and only on hand and was quick to sacrifice about 10 lbs of live rock from my display for biological filtration from the start knowing I would never re-add that rock back to my display after (medication or not). Will remove the rock now that I’m starting treatment. Question was whether to use API general cure for flukes first or copper. Used to following your QT guidelines and copper first but never had an issue like this before.

In this case, you can reverse the treatment schedule and run the GC first. Two doses, 7 days apart, then a partial water change and start coppersafe.

@Jay Hemdal last question , remove live rock I had in there to help cycle? This live rock was never going back into any display tank and was getting tossed at end of QT. Can general cure be dosed with live rock present? I know I need to remove it before copper power

I would leave the live rock in there - it is what is keeping your ammonia in check. General Cure can be used with live rock. Copper can also, as long as there isn't too much of it (absorbs the copper - so testing and redosing needs to be more frequent if a bit of live rock is present).

Did a partial water change first to ensure optimal water quality this morning. Then just dosed first dose of GC this morning. I’ll keep an eye on water quality and do second dose or GC in 7 days. I’ll keep everyone posted ! Fingers crossed
