I just got this melanurus wrasse and it’s huge compared to any other that I’ve seen I know you can’t really decide a fishes age based on size but is there anyway you guys could give me an estimate?

The picture isnt very good due to the colors but that's just what it is without a lens filter, but this could very well be an intermediate phase melanarus wrasse. I would guess somewhere between 6 to 12 months?

the guys at the lfs told me he’d be fine in a 40 gallon he looks about 4 inches long what do you think about that @josvanmeer @Zionas

Will be fine for a while, depending on how stocked it is already, they like to dart around. Mine is stressed rather easy and sleeps a lot so I am planning on getting a bigger tank within half a year. I also have a 40 gallon. My filamented flasher wrasse is a lot more chill than the melanarus.

I think I see a terminal male, but the photo is not that great.

And there's no way to guess age I'm afraid.

A 40 is on the borderline; it might amp up aggression.
