This guy goes into hiding every now and then and will show up later larger than ever. Judging by the Spirorbid worm scars on the old/dark part of the shell, this must have been one of the first snails I put in with the original CUC 2 years ago. The Spirorbids were only around for a few months.

That Derasa is over 9" for scale. The snail is the size of a racquetball. I wonder how much of my alk and Ca it is consuming 🤣

Is that a turbo?

I have a pretty big one that I stupidly got it at a pretty big size to begin with, didn't know what to do with it, so it just eats algae in the refugium, but we'll see if he's happy long term.

Also, technically, I don't think the snails consume the calcium in the water; I'm sure it comes from food and the rocks they much on.

IIRC, I put a few "Zebra Turbo Snails" in from reef cleaners in the first batch of CUC. I think this is one of them.

I hadn't thought about the possibility that snails get their minerals from the stuff they eat. 😳 I spend so much time treating everything in this aquarium like it is a plant!
