I just happened to be walking by the tank at the right time last night. Having my reef in a high traffic area vs the basement is a lot nicer I must say. Fortunately this went on for about 15 minutes so even after looking surprised for a minute I was able to grab the camera and get some good footage. This was the day before the full moon and shortly before the lights go out on the tank.

Really cool! It's so interesting to see the animals in our tanks doing this kind of stuff like they would in the wild.

Is your tank near a window, or how are they getting moonlight?

There are indeed big windows across from the tank. It gets a ton of sunlight and moonlight. I don't believe they actually need to see the moon. Like clownfish that spawn with the moon cycle for example.

Ah, interesting. I've read some studies where spawning in captivity was thrown off by artificial light pollution at night so I always thought that, while directly seeing the moon isn't important, the light level at night probably is.

Interesting any links?
In the past few month I've seen bristleworms spawn, as well as my lyretail damsels, although those guys have been regularly spawning for a while.

There is no light pollution where I live, this is a picture from the road in front of my house.

I'll have to dig around for the papers. These were studies in captivity where they had to take special measures to black out the tanks so that their artificial moonlights would "work"
