Miracle mud without a refugium

Leng Sy was a pioneer of the refugiums. Many used trickle filters before and after the introduction of Miracle Mud and the refugium, reefing changed drastically.

Leng Sy continues to be a pioneer in the reef hobby. His patented miracle mud has been tested for contents but a duplicate product that works as well doesn’t exist. I spoke to him at his booth in reefapalooza and asked if mysis eggs were added to the mud, cause all my tanks and refugiums were full of them. He didn’t really give me a direct answer, only that the MM promotes them. I bought and used Fiji Mud years ago to compare with MM, it was not the same for reasons unknown.
A substrate that I have been using, not in the refugium, but in a 29 biocube is Two little Fishies, Refugite. As a dark aquarium substrate it is just as good if not better than live sand,it doesn’t compact, and stays clean. Someone mentioned magnetic particles in another product above. Not magnetic, it is actually iron oxide in the mix that gets picked up by a glass cleaning magnet.

Hello fellow reefers,

I stumbled upon this product and its ability to increase micro fauna reproduction rates etc and was wondering if it would be crazy to add to my sump without growing macro algae in it?

I basically am just interested in a slow release of trace minerals but more so to see life and more pods roaming around my tank.

So out of curiosity does anyone use miracle mud; and if so is it mandatory to grow macro algae while using it?
The product is Ecosystem Aquarium Miracle Mud. Yes, it has been around for some time. I personally have not used it but there are numerous reports of it helping with head and lateral line erosion in tangs in home aquariums. This actually has been the main reason folks that use it have been happy with it from reports I have seen. You can use it alone without macro algae in the sump - just put in food safe plastic trays like Tupperware to confine it and that makes it easier to change some of it out as needed. I have seen it used this way. Not sure I would rely on it alone as trace element supply for a full reef. Hope this helps.

Cool thanks for sharing. I was not aware of that.
