For those of us switching to modern reef I wanted to create a thread so everyone can share their experience switching from whatever they were previously using and how they are currently engaging with the product. Most importantly the SUCCESS they are having with it. I will go first.

220g SPS tank that is 6 months old. I will be using the full RKS system including Complete reef food and Polypop. Recently I pulled my kalk out of the system and upped the amount of ESV 2 part I have been dosing in preparation of the switch. This way I can accurately gauge consumption and match the dosing up accordingly. I have been messaging the whatsapp customer support and Akil has been extremely helpful and responsive. He suggested not using any roller filter that is under 200 microns so in a week or so once the tank balances out post switch, I will turn off the rollermat and see how my nutrients react prior to removal from the system.

In terms of balancing out the dosage. You can literally go cold turkey and switch to modern reef. The calculators on thier website will show how much to dose. And even if you dont get it perfectly right in the beginning. You can up or lower the dosage till you land on your desired KH level.

Yea it’s not the most complicated thing. Just gonna empty and rinse my dosing containers and fill them with modern reef. Btw Akil did say that light will degrade the ingredients so if your containers are clear to cover them with something….or dose right out of their bottles.

Indeed. Personally I will just drill a whole on the the canisters lids and dose from there.

And for those that want to use 3 dosing heads only. You can accually mix kh1 and kh2 together!

We have it here in the U.K. It’s quite complicated to use. For a 220g tank, It is going to be expensive to run with the coral feeds alongside. If your tank is only 6 months old, be careful how much of their supplemental coral foods you dose as it may add a lot of nutrients and you may end up battling a bacteria outbreak. I think(but am not sure) that the feeds maybe aimed at SPS tanks.

Thank you. I plan to go slow with the foods as I have yet to feed any coral in my tank and am already having some nutrient issues.

Believe it or not but RKS is cheaper that other 3 or 4 parts here in the US.

As far as the food. I would not even start dosing them unless my nutrients are in check( low). Any liquid food for that matter will cause issues if your nutrients are not stable to begin with.

I’m thinking at the very least, how can one not do their ICP? Do I have this right? 3 MS for like $70??!!??!?!?!? If that’s correct I’m going to move from every 35 days to 21. I’m not changing my current supplier of trace (Captiv8) but, I’d like to follow you all and cherry pick the MS for now.

This is what their Reef Master Pro test will give results on. I don't believe that it is just an icpMS test however. They state that they have a bunch of different equipment which is specific to some of the variables that a regular icpms will not test accurately for. When I asked what the difference was between the flex and mastery test I received this response "ICP flex is only with ICP machines, reef mastery is with all and different machines not only icp". Take what you want from that statement

SALINITY (PSU, SG, mS/cm), Kh, pH, CO2, WATER CLARITY (MRNU), PAR LOSS (PARL), Ca, Cl, B, Br, K, Mg, F, Na, S, Sr, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, I, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Se, V, Zn, No3, P, Po4, Si, Al, As, Ag, Be, Bi, Cd, Ga, Ge, Hg, La, In, Nb, Pb, Sb, Sc, Sn, Te, Ti, Tl, W, Zr

So after reading the statement my problem is high alk mag and hardness . How do you resolve that ?
alk and mag you can just let the tank consume and over time it will come down. Water hardness I have no experience with however I don't see how a water softner before your RODI wouldnt help.

I took the time to go through the chats that I have had with modern reef and compile most of the substantial points here.

-Can I use a my filter roller? Filter rollers or socks that are smaller than 200 micron are not recommended with the RKS system. They make it harder for the system to work to its fullest. (the analogy they used is that separating out pods they use a 50 micron and that by filtering so finely we are actually pulling things out of the system that we are actively cultivating) While this makes sense to me it would leave me with JUST a skimmer for filtration.
-Can I use Kalkwasser with the RKS system? Its not good to introduce a 3rd source of KH and calcium but you can if it is low.
-Should I use carbon? We recommend avoiding carbon and other media types such as ozone as they do not work well in tandem with the RKS system. UV is ok.
-Can I continue using my tropic marin pro salt? Yes that salt will work fine however when you finish what you have switching ove to modern reef salt would be benificial.
-Should I use CRF and Polypop on a doser? They are better by hand, if not you will need a magnetic stirrer.
-Do CRF and Polypo need to be refrigerated? No unless temps are over 80 degrees farenheit.
-What is the shelf life on your products? There is no shelf life on the RKS system but CRF and Polypop is 3 years.

If I can think of any more things I will add them here as well.

Red Sea is apparently 200, don't think I'm going to take mine offline at least in the beginning.

Are you sure red sea is 200? That would be amazing if so. I have not been able to find any good information verifying that. I don't plan to take mine off for a little while in the beginning either. I found this thread but it doesnt really give a substantial answer. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/i...s-i-don’t-think-so-pictures-provided.1128914/

I will just leave it running to change as little as possible for now and in another month or so turn it off for a week and let the water overflow to see how my tank/nutrients are affected.
