I bought a montipora a week ago and started to notice white on the tips of the coral.

It’s kind of hard to see in the photo. I’m not sure if the white is spreading or if it is fine and I’m just being paranoid.

My Parameters:
Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 0ppm
Phosphate: .15ppm
Calcium: 380ppm
Alk: 8.2 dkh
Mag: 980 ppm

I should have tested before getting the monti. The monti was kind of an impulse buy. I’m trying to work on bringing the Cal, alk, and mag up slowly but nitrate hasn’t been going up at all. I have cheato algae and it has been growing quite a bit, so maybe that’s the cause of lack of nutrients. Anything will help. Thank you

Increase mag and calcium. Check alk first. Feed your tank. 0 nitrate can cause a disaster. The cheato great. How often do you harvest? Good luck.

Sorry for such a late reply. I am trying to increase cal and mag but alk has gotten up to 10.4 so I’m starting to do water changes to restore the balance and I haven’t harvested any chaeto at all yet.

doesn't white on the tips of SPS indicate growth? But yes as others mentioned you need to get your parameters in check.

Over the weeks, the white tips finally disappeared and were with replaced with a nice pink-red color. With the parameters, hopefully I can get everything in check within a week or so.
Any advice on bringing down alk without stressing anything?

I believe if you are increasing calcium then your alk with decrease slightly also but 8-12 is the acceptable range. I try to keep mine at 9 but it drops to low 8 between water changes to.

Oh! On feeding, my fish are finicky eaters and only eat frozen besides my clowns and Blenny. Any foods that you think they’ll like that is like pellets or flakes?
I use frozen and Chroma Boost pellets from reef nutrion

I would wait on water changes

At 10.4 I'd let it go down without doing anything. Mine is always around 10. Calciumaround 450. Mag 1400. All corals from zoas to monitis and acros grow and are happy.

I often mix high quality flake food with reefroids to spot feed corals. The fish will get enough. The flake food helps maintain phosphate and nitrate. 0s in these WILL cause a dino bloom.
