Could anyone post a list of popular montipora that are specifically plating varieties ?. I don't know enough about the "newer" named ones to tell....
The Montipora capricornis are the most popular pure plating species. They are generally cheap, easy and very fast growing,

I have an "encrusting" montipora invasion going on in my tank - mostly reverse superman. Encrusting in quotes because it likes plating out, onto the glass, along the overflow... I've probably got close to 3 square feet of it and another unknown encrusting monti.

This is the original colony started from a 1" frag. The mint Pavona seems to be keeping it at bay... for now.

Here is the opposite side of the tank. The unknown monti is in front. The second colony of reverse superman is to the left. The blue stylo dominating the shot is about 18" tall and about to break the surface of the tank.

My LFS got this in as a brownie, and it has turned out to be very striking. It has held the orange color in both our systems. Looks like a Mystic Sunset but is neon orange with half green half electric blue polyps. Calling it Mystic Sunrise. For reference, in the bottom picture the Sunrise is on the left Rainbow Monti in the middle and Mystic Sunset on the right.

Nice!

Just be aware that they grow like crazy once they set and will start to take over everything around. I started to remove some heavy branches from mine. Here is a picture of the colony before I started to trim it.

The growth is real lol ima start taking the monthly growth pics at the same time so that the tank and coral color are consistent. Probably heavier whites w/ the blue creeping in like these newer pics so about 3:30 Tim excited for November first
