I just bought a Nanobox reef tide plus m for my nano reef. The m version has moonlights and the app actually controls the percent of the moonlight according to moonlight in your set area. I'll attempt to explain how it works with pictures

Are these lunar cycles actually beneficial or just a gimmick

A lot of people have had success without the cycles. However, I couldn't say for sure if you are going to see anything spectacular or beneficial from it. I've heard some say that it does or can trigger spawning events from coral and fish, though. Personally, I would like to have a light that did this just for observational and experimental purposes.

Coral spawning has been linked to lunar cycles, which is a convenient way to predict them. However, it has been experimentally proven, for many - not all - marine invertebrates that it is actually the length of photoperiod that they sense.

So far I haven't seen any negative effects and I can see in my tank a little after lights go out so that's kinda nice. Only time will tell I guess
