I'm planning an Eshopps Mariner 180 gallon tank. It will be mixed reef, LPS on the bottom half and SPS on the top half. I'm thinking of going with mp40s for flow. How many should I plan to use in a tank that size? I'm thinking 4?

Now for my main question, I plan to buy the battery backup kit for the mp40s. I travel for a living and leave my tank for days at a time, so I would appreciate a little piece of mind. If I were to install say, 4 mp40s, could I supply only two of them with the battery back up to increase run time in the event of power loss? I just don't want to supply all 4 because that will drastically decrease run time. I would like to link them for the wave maker mode that appears to be built in to the system.

The ecotech branded battery backup looks the best, but the battery itself is subpar in my opinion for the cost.

Look at reef dudes YouTube channel

He makes one out of a lifepo battery that will last several times longer than the Ecotech branded one.

That is interesting. I have tons of lipos sitting around

I have a 180. Up until a couple of months ago, I used 4 mp40’s. Since then I use one tunze orca and 2 mp40’s. This is much better for me. If I were starting over, I’d consider 2 orcas with 6105’s.

I have used the ecotech battery backup for years. About a month ago, I started using an Ecoflow river 2 as a backup. I got a pretty good refurbished deal through Ecoflow on eBay. I use 2 mp40’s on backup. One or two mp40’s on a backup should suffice.
