I've spoken to MikeB about this in the past and that particular incident was not at all vendor related. Just making sure that you guys realized that he probably pulled an example out of his memory bank and wasn't firing directly at anyone else.

I'll see if I an dig up a specific example on here.

I have to say that I do not try to name corals unless already named and my coral business is very slow. Probably due to my own fault in not getting into this whole hype thing. Either way it is not my bread and butter.

It is still the consumer that drives sellers whether commercial or hobbyist to get involved in coming up with the next crazy name to put some crazy price tag on it for a pea sized frag.

You can see this all day long on the forums about whose got the "ultimate rare LE sick melting acan hurricane miami tyree whatever" coral for sale.

I feel that the only problem with this is that many of them do not stay even after several generations. I have some unreal purple deaths that in other peoples tanks they turn more of the brownish color that all of us has seen. As we all know, there are many different generations of purple deaths.

In my opinion, the color changing is what makes it interesting. I think its awesome to get in a green zoa that changes into something totally different then when it gets to your tank it might become something else and then again it may not.

In this case it would be impossible to keep the same name and expect people to know what coral the other person is talking about.

Look at Red Hornets and Purple Hornets. They are basically the same coral but different color. If we kept the name the same and you told me that you wanted a Purple Hornet and I sent a Red Hornet you would be ****** being that you paid a lot of hard earned cash for it especially if you already had a Red Hornet.

Myself, I have never tagged a coral with LE on it. I only call it LE if its know as that already. So, no I dont believe in LE coral.

I agree, if it truly is a different color morph, that is consistent or stays, it should have a different name. However, that should be proven over several generations - many of these corals are being named upon arrival or the first time they show up in a tank (and yes I agree that hobbiests are just as responsible as the vendors). How many, "Introducing . . " or "LE . . ." or "Presenting . . ." have we seen on the boards in just the last two days? How can a coral, which is going to grow and be fragged be LE? If I have three polyps of Nuclear Green in my tank and I'm selling one of the three, and nobody else in my area has this paly, can I call mine LE Nuclear Green?

I completely agree! I dont feel that Mike was targeting vendors. He sent me a PM stating the same. Therefore, my posts are not targeting Mike or anyone else. I just got caught up in this thread because I am bored to death because Dallas basically shuts down if the weather gets a little bad.

This entire problem is tired and old. This is why I name my corals the most horrible and stupid things so people are like "I'm not calling it that" .... chea

No offense meant, but I say this in general and not pointed at anyone specific.

1st problem, some consumers or rabid collectors.. they all have to be like the jones' or better. The crazier or catchier the name the better for them.

2nd Some reefers, some want to be like other that have named corals. so if you look at coralpedia, you even have plain ol' buttom polyps with names. or simple looking polyps with crazy names. You know have every dick and harry naming corals left and right, so they can feel good and say hey I have a coral name by me. Some of the names don’t even have anything to do with how the polyp looks or what it resembles.

3rd some sellers ( be it vendors/reefers ) putting names on polyps that are already known as something, but since it morphed a bit, now put a new name to it and sells it at that.

This is like a broken record yes, cause it's going to keep on happening. I agree that NO polyp should be a LE or what ever designer tag you wanna put on it as they all at one point or another morph.

Great discussion thread here... props, I applaud all here in the discussion, both vendors and reefers alike.

i think the entire name game is all your fault and i'm telling mom!!!! lol now that’s funny.

Naming corals is fun. I've named a few now, some mine and a few for others. Funny to me that doing such could upset anyone. They weren't brown polyps btw. No one was interested in my Mr. Hanky Brown Eye chalice Kraylen.
