Hello: I am in process of rebuilding my 800G tank. 'L' shaped 5'x10' i would like a school or multiple yellow tangs. I currently only have 1 large blond naso. Would also like 1 purple tang. I'm looking for advice on the number of yellows. When i had this tank setup years ago i had 1 blond naso, 1 purple, 1 yellow with no issues. I was hoping to have like 7 to 9 or more. In the old tank i had issues with other schools of fish. I started with about 13 blue green chromas and the school would bully the weakest fish and about every 2-3 month i would loose one until just 1 was left after several years. I had the same issues with a school of lyretail anthias. I would like to here from people that have had sucuss with multiples for years. I have great luck with tangs, mine have always been very fat.

I had 3 in a 4 foot 270 and they got along fine. Cromis and anthias are very hard on the lowest member. Tangs aren't like that, and should get along so long as they aren't right on top of each other. The lowest member will get plenty to eat and be left alone and do fine. Imo you will be fine with as many yellows as you want in an 800.

I've never heard of mixing purple and yellows, and there might be some risk there.

awesome! i have a very similar tang stock list planned for my own 180g! (might include a long nose black tang in my own group).

I too wanted to add a Black as a last zebrasoma but might be pushing my luck.
The Gem has become the dominant in the tank but the purples are no push overs.

Purples and yellows are very happy together, I had a close friend that kept 7 yellows and 8 purples together for around 15 years and they were great together and with other tang species. Just make sure there’s enough food for everyone so they don’t fight over it and you should be good to go :)

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like it should work well. The last thing i want to have this large tank and watch fish die.

One more question. Do you all have a few recommendation for getting fish on line. Its been years since i have bought a fish. Back in the day i would go inland aquatics but they closed and i moved away. I don't mimd paying more for something that has been held to ensure its good to go. Seems like i came across a site a year ago that was into high end fish bit can't remember. Thanks

I had a hippo and a yellow in my 180 and 2.5 Yrs ago upgraded to a 10 ft long 375. At that time I added 2 more yellow and a large sailfin and the 5 have done great together. The 375 recently leaked and everything came out and is in holding tanks while the tank gets resiliconed. Contemplating adding a gem tang when they all go back in. What do you think??
