Had all kinds of live rock from many different places with god knows what on it so fresh start bought 29g tubs at home depot for $9 muriatic acid was $9 a gallon filled the tub with water and added one gallon let it sit for an hour or two put the hose back in the tub n let it overflow for 15 20 min kindof pre rinse i guess then pulled it out n used a pressure washer to rinse off fully and it really did strip it off. Bought a 150g tub at tractor supply $130 and have the rock in 90 degree salt water cycling happy with the results should of took before pics but fidnt plan on posting about it but great way to start off clean

I did the same, but took it a step further. Just to make sure I got what needed getting and soaked the rock in a bleach water solution for a couple day's.
Pressure washed, re-soaked the rock and added some AmQuel just to be safe.
Now I have it curing in a 150 gal Tractor Supply tub, waiting to be used.

You can use lanthanum chloride to further remover bound phosphate. You can do it on the saltwater as well.

I suggest letting it mature a good long time, in the dark, with weekly water changes and some 'feeding' to support developing the good bacteria and a bio film on the rock. Seems to help prevent future algae problems. Mine went over 2 months.
