After a long hard move recently into our new home I have landed on this 300g runway for a banging deal! This runway inspired me to go after a lagoon style Acropora system as I have always LOVED top down viewing and lets be real.... Nobody enjoys cleaning glass 😝 Anyways here is the breakdown so far, most equipment was included with the system, but I will be noting what equipment still needed

THE SYSTEM

  • Display Tank: 320g 8'x4'x16" - fill height roughly 300g
  • Sump: 150g Rubbermaid
  • Rock: 150lbs of dry rock with mix of old ocean rock/marco (will pick up more later if not enough for display)

EQUIPMENT

  • Skimmer: Older model My Reef Creations Pro 1
  • Return Pump: Danner mag 24 (will upgrade later to DC)
  • Dosing: GHL 4 pump master doser 2.1 (I do not know if this will be used yet)
  • Heating: Two 800w heating elements were included not sure on controller for them yet
  • Lighting: 28 total T5 bulbs included. The heat generated and cost of bulb replacement I am looking at going with a T5/Reef Breeders Meridian combo
  • Controller: Hydros XP8/X4 (still need to order) combined with the WaveEngine to run the Gyre pumps (already have)

I am stoked to get this system up and running! I have already acid washed the dry rock as I do with every system I build, later today I will pull the rock out of the fresh water for a solid rinse before allowing to fully air dry for a few days while waiting on the glue to start my rock structures. The current plan after getting the system running and cycled will be to let it sit for a few months with no lighting only ambient lighting from the room and just let the tank mature, add a few smaller fish and wait. This will be a bare bottom system which will require time and patience since it will be a dry rock start before I start loading her up with sticks. I have contemplated doing an order of live rock to add more biodiversity into the system, just hard pulling the trigger to spend on life rock 😅

The stand had to be fully disassembled to move, but she sure is sturdy. I do not plan on using the top that was cut off, I like the look of a open area and do plan on either hanging lights from the ceiling or building a floating canopy roughly 16"-18" off the top of the tank.

Took all the rock out of the tub and letting it dry out, weather this week is all sun and 90s so perfect!

Found this large piece that still has a shell inside the rock. Pretty cool if you ask me, makes you wonder how long it sat there until the rock formed around it

Lots of potential here. I'm sure your plate is full already, but adding a carlson/borneman surge would be so cool.

Sorry just seeing this! That would be pretty awesome for sure, I would love to add a surge to the system but only down side would be figuring out how to create that surge without creating any water splashing or excess bubbles getting salt creep onto the walls. I might have to mess around with the ideal though

Yes they are a total pain which I guess is why you rarely see them. If you mounted a dump bucket high enough to overcome a little back pressure, you could submerge the outlet just under the water line to minimize splashing. Something to keep in mind if the spirit moves you.

Honestly I thought about how cool it would be to have the bucket mounted in the ceiling above, but either way would take some planning. Would be very helpful to distribute flow without spending a ton on wavemakers. Would just take some planning and experimenting with
