It can be reaction in the tissue but to confirm lift it and look at the foot and post a picture please.
 
Yeah I just saw my filefish nip at my clam and he is already out
 
I had that clam about a week ago. Hate to tell you this but - he gone. Did the exact same thing too. Shriveled into his shell just like that and the next time i saw it it was caught up in the power head. It sucks cuz i had it about a year and it was doing great! As soon as the fish start picking at the flanges, that the indication that its gone.
