My clownfish Trio Journey

I thought I’d document my attempt to set up an ocellaris clown trio in my new magnifica.

The three clowns are juveline siblings raised by and purchased from Dr Reef.

Less than 2 h after adding the new clowns to the tank, they found, and are now swimming in, the magnifica. They tried out an LTA anemone for a few seconds and did not like it.

As they grow and mature, I’ll update what happens, hopefully remaining as a trio!

I am hosting a tank which is starting to be a Anemone tank. I can't grow other corals or nice fish because they will end up touching the nems.
It was not really planed like this.. but I am hooked so this is my way.

The problem is I have 1 Percula left which is a bit of a mess concerning behaviour. I never sell fish, so I need to give her a different tank.

Since this week I made the decision to move her and start learning about how Amphiprion in general work and what I need to start reading. I would love to get them in a group.

Any... experience is worth it so thanks for posting.

The clownfish are now wrestling, probably for dominance, but maybe just for practice the way young animals often do.

They will be great fun to watch for a while, but when one turns female keep an eye on everything else in the tank. She will kill it. This goes for your hands as well.

How are the clowns today? Your video show three of them fighting for dominant. No winner or second place yet. Once this is settle, the third wheel will be kick out of the anemone.

I am hearing stories of working setups, but am not sure yet what is "the thing".

Can you tell something about the breeder? Did they host them with many in a tank or separated them? Are these 3 part of a bigger group?

We breed our own in our facility. These clowns were part of a larger clutch, But over time some form bonds and start to hang out together. In this clutch these 3 were always hanging out together. So we sold the trio to Randy as per his requirement/order notes.

This morning, all three are still in the anemone and there's no apparent wrestling like yesterday. There is some signaling to each other by briefly "vibrating" when another is very close, but no apparent aggressive moves. None of them is clearly staying away from any other. Maybe the vibration is just reinforcing whatever got established yesterday. :)

My clown fish started off as two different pairs on opposite sides of the tank. Then one day my female midnight randomly went missing. After a couple of months of being on his own he found his way over to the other pair where he or probably she (guessing it's a female now judging by the size) has been for 3 years now.

I was searching a bit if it would help when you start with a group that grew up with each other, but I think I am reading the groups will fall apart.

We will see what happens. My last trio came from a sibling set, IIRC. But I fully realize it may not work out.

Pretty cool! I have a clownfish book that talks about clown trios, specifically clarkii trios, suggesting it is possible but unlikely/difficult. . . Though the book is like 30 years old at this point haha curious to see how this works out!
