So I posted on the new to saltwater and reef page but I think this is more where my heart is!

I have wanted a snowflake eel for years! Years, is NOT an exaggeration. I have several freshwater tanks but never wanted to splurge on a tank big enough for a good saltwater tank. Welp! My family surprised me with a 150 gallon tank for Mother's day! To say I am over the moon is such an understatement!

I have questions.
I obviously have the tank but I still need all the other things. I need to know what I need to make a perfect home for my soon to be new baby in a few months! (If it's able to be achieved in a few months, if not, whenever I can bring them safely once my tank has completely settled)

Also, 150 gallons... Is that room for multiple eels? No? Can a snowflake share a tank with another type of eel?

Ohhh... Puffers? Are they good tank mates or will the snowflake try to eat it?

If you've made it through my ramble, I'll apologize for it being a ramble! I am truly so excited and just want to do it all right!

So spam me with any and all advice, any pointers... Seriously, I want to hear it all!

And I will probably be reading every thread in this forum. 😅

A good, tight-fitting top. A complex but strong rockscape will make an eel happiest.

They also like but don’t need sand. Also good filtration is recommended.

Definitely, look into smaller eels like a banana, fimbriated, chain link, perhaps even a zebra? Basically anything less then 3ft. You could also look into snake eels if you want a free swimming eel.

The issue isn’t an eel eating a puffer but the other way around. Puffers bite, but if you are careful it could work. I’d add it late and research which species.

Have a tight fitting lid, good filtration, plenty of hiding spots, and that’s all you need.

It depends on the type of eel, but you can have two eels in the same tank. Just add them at the same time and at the same size.

Some puffers are decent tank makes. Valentini, dogface, porcupine for example.

Multiple eels yes! They get along very well.

Rocks are important for eels. I have caves, overhangs, rocks they have tunneled under and ledges for them to swim through. Also watch your wavemakers, I attached a picture to show it but they will swim around the wavemaker. I have a guard on it to protect them. I assume you have a sump? An oversized protein skimmer is a must. These guys poop a lot.

Feeding-
A variety of frozen is important. I use LRS chunky, Rod’s predator, Ocean nutrition predator, silversides and shrimp to feed. The blends are great because they have a ton of chunks of different meaty food that they enjoy.

Morays are broken down into two groups, fang tooth and pebble tooth. Your pebble tooth eels are invert eaters, scientific family Echidna. Snowflakes are in this family. Meaning they dont really eat fish but like shrimp, squid, clams ect…

Your fang tooth eels scientific families Muraena , Siderea and Gymnothorax eat fish, so thats something to consider when keeping a mix of eels. I keep all kinds of morays.

I don't know if this is a dumb question but my lid isn't "tight fitting". It kinda flips in half. 😅😅 Any recommendations on a tight lid?

Oh they are absolutely beautiful!! I am so excited!

Also, I don't have a sump. It came with 2 90 gallon on the back filters? I will get whatever I need to get though so I will look into sumps!

I wrote the food name down so I can look into it. I'm assuming it's something you order? If so, perfect! Thank you so much!

And, I'm so sorry for all the questions, this may be a complete no no but, there are so many "live rocks" on FB marketplace. Are they a big no for another tank? It's fine if so but some are good priced so if possible, I'll probably be taking a ride. Lol

That seems so simple but I know in reality from just scrolling around this forum I'm in for a lot of work ahead! But I can't wait to get to the end result!

I've read and seen scenarios where an eel tried to eat a puffer and well the puffer puffed in its mouth (you can just imagine the rest of the story)

If you are interested in keeping other eels with the snowflake I suggest that you first tell us the type of eel you are interested in keeping with the snowflake (not all eels go together)

If the snowflake you are getting is a baby, I suggest feeding them every other day.

This isn't mentioned much, but I highly recommend treating the eel with general cure in a quarantine tank incase of any internal parasites for atleast 2 to 3 weeks.

It's not. It's more like thick plastic. Flimsy. Not flopping with a finger push but definitely not heavy. Or glass.
you need a heavy lid.

Just a one inch gap is enough for a slip out, these guys are powerful creatures.

I still have a scar from a year ago of being bitten by my eel Lol

The more I see, the more I'm loving zebras. I love the big eyed ones also though. 😅

And oof. Yeah, I may need to rethink a puffer. It was the first thing one of my sons asked after I opened the horribly large box they wrapped, "can we get a puffer fish with it?!" Haha.

(We may have to get another tank, son!)

So quarantine them even if they are the first animals going in the tank?

Sump is a must for filtration, especially with multiple eels. My skimmer is rated for a 500 gallon tank. My tank is 300 gallons. Must have for my eels! I also have a grouper too who poops a lot. And I use carib sea rocks (dry) and just get the styles I like and stack them to make the scape. Then I put sand in and fill to cycle. Important to make sure your rocks are on the glass cause eels will tunnel in sand and you dont want a rock slide!

Unless you wanna treat the whole tank with medicine I suggest that you put them in quarantine where there's lesser water to treat.

A snowflake or most other fangtooths will do well with a zebra, but not in a 150 gallon. By this i mean that a zebra might not do so well in a 150 gallon once it's big.

If you really love the zebra there is an alternative which is the echidna polyzona (highly identical)

Oh yes I love Nebby. Shes my zebra, always coiled up in her rock. Very sweet eel. But she is huge. Shes probably just over the 3 foot mark now and super thick. I loved them too so I upgraded my 125 gallon to the 300 and got her! Here she is. The second picture is her in her cave with Ghost, my snowflake. You can see how small Ghost is compered to Nebby. Ghost is also fully grown. Nebby isnt full grown yet

Ive kept puffers with eels, no issues. However most puffers get way too big for a 150 gallon. You could do some of the tiny puffers. They get like 3-5 inches total.

I will dig more into different types of eels! I'm excited to hear I can have not only one but possibly 2 and a tank mate. Lol. I will work around and adapt how I need to to make things the best for them.
