Welcome to R2R!!! Sounds like long hair algae. The only way I have been able to get rid of long hair algae is with Reef Flux. Do you have pictures of the algae so we can identify it properly.

Welcome to R2R!!!! Green or brown long hair algae it seem to be by what your saying but without pics hard to diagnose if iy long hair and you don't feel like adding chemicals or can't either or i would remove as much by hand and pick up on a large clean u crew might take little longer but will have good outcome ...most likely your phosphates and nitrates might be high due to over feeding and how long is your light cycle on for?
