I had one a long time ago. Never had issues with it, but had tons of critters living in it. I will say, I never disturbed it, but when breaking the tank down for a move, it had a very faint smell that was not good towards to bottom of it. I currently run about 4” of special grade in all but the frag tank. It has about 1” to 2” mix of crushed coral, special grade and some larger crushed coral on one third of the tank. The larger is just where I put shrooms and such, so they attach to the larger substrate.

No issues with the 4” bed, as my critters and decorated goby turn it over quite regularly.
