My refugum chaeto needs cleaning

My chaeto is extremely dirty and bogged down. It’s grown so much I want to clean it and save any pods that may have grown in it.

Rinse it in a separate bucket of saltwater and then place it back in your sump. You will still save quite a few pods in the batch of chaeto but you might lose some in the bucket. If they are amphipods then you can strain the dirty water through a 200micron mesh filter and pick out the amphipods. But, I think the other pods are a loss for you.

when I do a water change I take my cheato and shake it off in a bucket of the old water. Knock whatever I can off. throw half away and put back in the fuge.

Then pour out most the bucket and then dump pods etc back in the fuge

Yeah! I ordered a fine mesh dial strainer for a five gallon bucket I’ll use a rinse bucket along with a second rinse before placing it back in the sump. Then the dirty work of salvaging the pods.
Not sure if my strainer is 200 microns in fact I know it isn’t, I want to get the big stuff before I get to the 200 micron filter.

Thanks for that. I’ll probably need to turn off my pump and maybe do some sump cleaning at the same time and the other portions of the of the sump probably a bigger job than I thought it was but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Thanks again.
