My grandmother was an award winning bird carver for a long time. When I was growing up she carved a ton of stuff. She made me a number of cool things as well. My wife had always been very interested in her birds and talked about learning to do it as well. When my grandmother passed away, my grandfather gave everything to my wife. Tools, supplies, books, magazines, files, drawings etc etc. It was a lot of stuff.
My wife dived right into it and immediately had the knack and talent for it with no prior experience. I would even say she immediately surpassed even my grandmother's capabilities with her very first one!
She carves everything from solid rectangular blocks of wood and makes them from visual photos and does not measure. So far she has done a number of birds over the last 6-10 months and just did her first angel fish. This is my favorite obviously. Eventually, she plans to start an Etsy store or something once our son starts school.
