Mycedium Growth Habit

Are Mycedium/ Chalice growth habits always plate-like or shelf-like or will they conform to the shape of the rock on which they are growing?

I have seen them grow both ways, my expreience seems to be that theyt conform to the rock for a while then start to shelf, but it could be a flow issue as well.
