Looking for some quick input from experienced nano reefers.

Red Sea Max Nano G2 XL, just about cycled and getting ready to add first livestock. I’m getting conflicting advice from different sources + a buddy.

Main questions:

Stocking order

Option A: wait for diatoms/algae → add small cleanup crew → add a couple hardy corals → then fish a few weeks later

Option B: add fish first → let nutrients build → then add cleanup crew and corals

For a nano, which approach is more stable?

Cleanup crew
Do you wait until you actually see algae, or add a few snails right away after cycling ?

Lighting
I’m running ~6 hr, low intensity, blue-heavy ramp
Buddy says longer hours + more white early

Which approach tends to avoid algae issues early?

Goal is a clean, stable build—not rushing anything.

Appreciate any input.

Congrats! I’m not experienced but I’ve had a nano (pretty sure current tank is a nano as well) and learned a lot. I would do option A. Fish in cycles are cruel in my opinion and can be done with cycle staters. I wouldn’t add CUC till algea and diatoms starts but you manly want to start testing your water (nitrite, nitrate, ammonia is the main ones). When I did my nano I waited for parameters to level out, added fish and then added CUC. I waited on coral for a few months before adding since nanos can be unstable in the beginning. Good luck!!

You will always get conflicting info in this hobby as there is rarely a right or wrong way.

clean up crew can include herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. You can a fish if you want (if the cycle is complete) and a couple of hermit crabs and snails. Or you can add a shrimp or crab or serpent star and add fish later, honestly whatever you want. Only be mindful of what everything eats, its not only algae, so spend a few minutes googling everything before you buy it. Good luck

Thanks for your input! I'm just about done cycling it's been cycling for a month and I just did another test run with ammonia and it's leveled out so I'm going to do my first water change this weekend.

As long as parameters are set no reason not to add some fish. What’s your stocking idea? If you do add CUC you may need to supplement feeding. I have a range of CUC that are herbivores, carnivores, or eat both. It helps to have a variety.
