Need some help on how to skin a stand well!

Ok here is a photo of my other furniture. This is the style and color I want to match.
So someone who is a more seasoned carpenter...what type of food, what stain?

To get the look on mine I stained the cedar planks with a dark walnut and then very lightly painted white over top a day later. There is barley any white paint on the top so it does not cover the stain. I just liked the planks because they are textured not just a smooth surface. I have seen many different types of wood done with this stain and paint method though.
